Whenever I go to Simmons I always go north. Are there any good spots south near the Little Manatee River? Are there any good launches ON the LMR?

Not to many spots that you can reach from Simmons. There are some nice deep canals inside the park south of the boat ramp, you can follow those back into the park. Further south there is Dickman point, it has some shallow mud flats, further around the corner is Little Harbor (Bahia Beach), there are a few spots back in there that hold some fish, but that can be a long exposed paddle. I dont think you can launch from the boat ramp at Little Harbor.
As far as spots on the River, Domino Boat Ramp launches you into a small bayou which is good in the winter. From there you can paddle back towards the 41 bridge, which will put you in the river. Be careful, lots of boats / water skiers /.
Hope this helps.

Just South of the LMR is Little Cockroach Bay. You can explore all back in there. This time of year it should be holding nice reds. There are many deep holes along the passes. There is also a sand bar about 100 yards out. Fish both sides of the sand bar. We caught a nice cobia and some good trout on the outside of it last week. The good thing for you kayakers is it's a manatee zone from the LMR all the way down to Cockroach. Boats are supposed to idle through there. Many do, some don't, including Capt. Billy Nobles. Watch out for him cause he's got a big boat and throws off a big wake. He often glides right along the shore on the inside of the sand bar. You can't miss him. His boat has a real nice graphic wrap that says, "Kimberly Ann" with a pretty waves, kind of like the ones he throws off. On your way South, try to stay clear of the channels. Boats are up on plane in the channel's that run along the peninsula and wrp around near the beach. It would probably be best for you to paddle straight out from Simmons into the manatee zone and then head South from there. Be awere that there is a channel you will have to cross about half way to the LMR that runs East and West. Big bayliners run that channel and have no regard for anyone or anything and they throw off bigger wakes than Billy Nobles. Hope this helps some.

Bahia Beach is really a great spot. Especially come fall. Last time I checked you can still launch from there....I think. They charged boats $10 to launch, but I have never had to pay to launch my kayak. The men that work there are real nice. The woman that works or worked there is a b*tch! It is worth checking out to see if you can launch there though.

If you want to fish Lil Cockroach, just launch from the boat ramp at Cockroach and paddle North. Much closer and safer than trying to get there from Simmons.
There is a backway from the boat ramp to Big Pass, it is not very well marked, but it's a nice paddle and you dont have to worry about all the idiots running in the idle only zone.
