Bishop Harbor Restoration Project
After talking with Mr. Brandt F. Henningsen, Sr. Environmental Scientist, SWIM Program and project manager for the Terra Ceia Preserve. He provided me with a map which outlines the restoration project.

The green and blue areas which encompass the property across the road from the boat ramp and the finger canals to the west of the boat ramp will be sculptured into wet lands areas just like those at the Kitchen. This project has already started and will run through next spring. This is the area of most concern as it was originally thought that they were going to completely fill in these canals.

The big green cross hatch area was once farm land. The future plans for it include removing the berms created by the farmers as well as removal of non-native species of plants.
The Canoe and Kayak Launch – This area has been closed off. There are a series of small canals that are going to be filled in, with the exception of the canal for the launch. The non-native species of plants are going to be removed and a wetlands area is to be created. (Over lay is not on the map).
I am in contact with the person that is in charge of this part of the project and hope to have an update. I don’t expect it to be re-opened anytime soon, which is no big deal as you could not use it anyway. If you have any ideas or suggestions that you would like me to pass on, get them to me.
There are plans for the boat ramp and I will pass those along when I know more.
Just thought you would like to know what’s going on down there.

| Thanks Heywood...I don't know how often I'll go fishing there but I think it's good that all of our waterways are cared for. You're also a valuable man to have in our club. Thanks. |

Bishop Harbor Canoe / Kayak Launch
I spent a couple of hours yesterday with Don Bergeron, Park Manager for the Terra Ceia Preserve State Park. He gave me a good outline of what is happening down at Bishops, especially the boat ramp and canoe / kayak launch. I have attached a photo, it’s not the best, but it will give you a better visual on what might happen. First of all, the ball is rolling on this project as you read this. Once Don gets approval from Tallahassee on exactly where the boat ramp is going to be, then he will know where to put the canoe / kayak launch.
The proposed new boat ramp will move across the current canal to the property to the east. There are some concerns that keeping the existing ramp where it is, it could cause some safety issues being on the corner of the road like it is. So the plan is to move it to the east and exiting into the harbor thru the eastern canal or the current canal.
The old boat ramp property would then be used for a new canoe / kayak launch. The old one down the road is going to be plowed over. The actual launch area would be along the west shore line of the newly created wetlands area. From this point you can travel in two different directions and you will not be competing against the boaters.

I passed along a lot of your suggestions; Don is a kayaker, so he is pretty familiar with what we need. I came away with a good feeling about this project, I think he wants to make this area the premier destination for kayakers. I have forwarded an e-mail to him listing all of your suggestions and I hope to hear from him real soon that the project will be starting.
There are also some plans to put in some other launches close to his office on Frog Creek. When I hear more I will pass it along.

| This area needs a good parking and launch area. For all I care, the boat ramp could be eliminated. That area is too shallow most of the time for a boat anyways, and the nicer park would attract more visitors and hopefully deter people from mischief. Bishops Harbor would be another great spot for a pole and troll zone if you ask me. |
