I thought a thread containing your favorites would be good info for the newbies. Here is the info desired:
1) Favorite tide to fish (be specific, not just any tide) 2) How you fish it (example: high tide on grass flats) 3) Species you catch 4) Favorite baits you use
Remember to be as specific as possible. All of us struggled at one time to catch fish. This info can point people in the right direction.

I'll go first.
1) I prefer big high tides. 2) I am a spot fisherman not a sight fisherman, so I like to fish oyster bars and mangrove shorelines where I may not see the fish, but they are there. 3) I usually catch Snook, Redfish and occasionally larger sized trout in these areas. 4) I know I will be bludgeoned for this, but I like to use Greenbacks and Pinfish. |

1. I prefer lower tides that are incoming. 2. I am a sight fisherman so the lower tides help me see pushes, wakes, and tails. 3. Usually I am going to see redfish in snook during these tides. 4. The baits I use are usually weedless soft plastics in colors that "match the hatch" depending on the bait that is around. If the wind is down, I'm throwing fly.

Favorite Tide - I like an out going and the first part of the incoming.
How I fish those tides - Out going -- I will set up on passes or spots that I know that the fish have to come out of because the water is going to be to low, also I set up on spots where the bait will get flushed out onto the flats. As the tide falls, I will move out further away from the mangrove edges and follow the fish into deeper water. The northern most canal in Simmons Park is a good spot to fish a out going tide, it flushes bait out onto the flat. First part of the Incoming -- I will work the flats, looking for pot holes or sand bars. Pot holes may only be 1 to 2 feet deeper than the surrounding water. Sand bars, I will look for gaps in them that the fish will be holding around until the water gets deep enough to move onto the flats. This is a great time to look for tailing fish as they push onto the newly flooded flats.
Species - On the out going I try to target snook as they will be forced out of the mangroves and onto the flats. The first part of the incoming I will look for redfish tailing on the flats.
Favorite Baits - Early in the morning and late afternoon, calm water, I love to throw a topwater lure. Zara Spook Jr. in Saltwater Bone or Gold Belly and Dark Top. Snook - I like a Exude Saltwater RT Slug in Pearl, rigged on a 2/0 or 3/0 Mustad Power lock hook. I also like to use the DOA Fire Tail jerk bait. (Pearl with a pink tail) Redfish - Again, I like an Exude Saltwater RT Slug in Arkansas Shad using the same Mustad hook. In the water this bait takes on a golden color. In the winter time I will switch to the DOA 3" jerk bait in Golden Bream.
